Translated literally as “the Sun of Abu Dhabi” Shams Abu Dhabi, located on the north eastern waterfront is set to occupy nearly a quarter of Reem Island. I have heard that it will likely be the first project to near completion although final dates are speculatively set for 2009 (first phase) - 2011 (final phase).

“Shams Abu Dhabi will have residential living areas that occupy 90% of the project, while the remaining 10% will be used for commercial and recreational areas. It will contain around 100 skyscrapers, 22 thousand residential units, and a million square meter (10.8 million square foot) park.” **

Shams Abu Dhabi is being mainly developed by Sorouh Investments. Leading projects in Shams Abu Dhabi are the Gate District, Sky Tower project (set to be the highest skyscraper in all of Abu Dhabi), the Marina, CBD (commercial business district and Icon Tower), Entertainment District, and Central Park. Shams Abu Dhabi, will be intertwined by a canal network which will be used to connect districts and parks. Also, there will be a 5 star “Island Resort Hotel".
